Diesel Particulate Testing

Several methods of collecting and analyzing particulate matter samples are available at ETC.

Gravimetric PM filter papers are collected with an ETC designed particulate sampler. This system is intended for use on engines both with and without diesel particulate traps. The system is of the double dilution type and features a heated cyclonic separator and filter holder assembly. Filter flow and dilution flow are independently adjustable to provide the flexibility needed for all possible engine conditions. The filter holders are sized for 47mm filter papers. During diesel particulate testing, filters may be loaded for each phase or as a single composite mode.

Particulate matter can also be analyzed using AVL 415S Smoke Meters, AVL 483 Micro Soot Sensor, and Celesco Opacity Meters. Additionally, engine out particulate filters can be analyzed for VOC via the vacuum sublimation method

ETC has a dedicated room for weighing and stabilizing filters, currently with the following features and equipment:

The weigh room has been upgraded to have air filtration and environmental control systems compliant with 40CFR86.1312-2007 and 40CFR1065. The weigh room is similar to a Class 1000 clean room environment.
